4 “T here are no rules.” So says Dr Donough Wilson in the ‘In Conversation’ article for this inaugural issue of Unmanned Systems Technology . Of course, any lack of rules or otherwise has to be taken in context. Dr Wilson is talking about the design and development of UAVs. When it comes to the operation of such craft, currently there is a huge amount of red tape across much of the globe, and rightly so. The key point in the context of the technically oriented publication you have in your hands is the scope that exists now for fresh engineering solutions. My background is in motor racing, which I like to describe as a great technical adventure. In many respects it is but nowadays when it comes to individual race series there is, alas, invariably a weighty tome constraining the engineer in terms of the technology that can be deployed. Over the years, sanctioning bodies have found it increasingly necessary to stymie creative thinking on grounds of cost and/or safety. Unmanned systems technology is bound by commercial and operational concerns but fundamentally, as Dr Wilson explains, at the moment it is an open book for innovation – just as racing was 50 years ago. I wish I’d covered racing back then, and I’m glad that in these pages we can report on an emerging technology at such an inspiring time. Especially as this uninhibited engineering is set to fundamentally reconfigure the world as we know it.
