8 Platform one Sony Mobile Communications, the phone maker, has teamed up with ZMP in Japan to develop autonomous aircraft for industrial applications. The joint venture, called Aerosense, will develop unmanned systems for applications such as pipeline monitoring for the oil and gas industries, and agricultural systems. Sony brings its Aerosense will combine Sony’s comms expertise with ZMP’s test technology camera and cellular radio technologies to the table, as well as cloud-based data management and robotics and control software, while ZMP makes hardware and software test systems for autonomous cars and has a UAV project in development. The aim behind Aerosense is to combine these assets for applications such as surveying, observation and inspection, rolling out these services for business customers in 2016.
