46 nano-UAVs, a threat that has grown with the increasing commercial availability of small airborne systems, which pose intrusive and more malicious dangers. Yoav Har-Even explained, “Drone Dome is an end-to-end system designed to provide effective airspace defence against hostile drones used by terrorists to perform aerial attacks, collect intelligence and other intimidating activities.” First unveiled at the LAAD show in Brazil in April, Drone Dome incorporates a Rada RPS-42 radar and a Controp MEOS EO system equipped with long- range daylight TV and thermal imaging sensors; also included are radio signal detectors. The system can be configured as a single deployable unit or implemented as a tailored installation to provide protection for high-value fixed installations. Detecting a drone threat is typically achieved at a range of around two miles, whereupon the system analyses the vehicle’s guidance and communications frequencies. Drone Dome can be operated by a single person, with screens showing a local situation map with drone tracks and imagery from the EO/IR sensors. Additional sensors can also be networked to expand the coverage area. Neutralisation of the drone is accomplished using jammers supplied by Netline. They can be directionally targeted against the drone’s comms, or against its GPS guidance. The operator can activate the jammers manually, or the system can deploy them automatically, according to preset algorithms. Thales launched a new UAV system at the Farnborough Air Show. Known as Fulmar X, it offers an endurance of more than eight hours and an operating range of over 500 miles, yet has a wing span of only 10 ft. Developed by Thales in Spain, the Fulmar has been selected by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, which is buying six systems to equip fast patrol craft. The Fulmar X is another UAV that makes use of advanced materials, being constructed entirely from composites. It is launched from a bungee catapult and recovered in a net, allowing it to be used from confined spaces and at sea. It carries a combined EO/IR sensor, and can be configured with an AIS (automatic identification system) for maritime missions, and a transponder. It can operate as a standalone system or be integrated into wider surveillance systems. Thales also displayed its Spy’Ranger mini-UAV, which was developed in conjunction with Aero Design. The craft has an advanced sensor gimbal that allows it to maintain track on targets even when the vehicle is manoeuvring hard. It also has an encrypted and robust datalink so that comms are maintained in an environment where certain anti-drone measures are being used. Leonardo-Finmeccanica said it has two customers for its Falco Evo long- endurance unmanned aircraft system. The manufacturer did not identify the customers, saying only that they are existing military customers of the Falco platform and are based in the Middle East. The Evo comes with a higher maximum take-off weight – 1433 lb compared with 1080 lb for the Falco – a longer wingspan of 41 ft and an increased payload capacity of 220 lb. The Evo also has greater endurance, of August/September 2016 | Unmanned Systems Technology Drone Dome will detect a threat typically at a range of about two miles The Fulmar X has a range of more than 500 miles yet has only a 10 ft wingspan
