On the other side are those that don’t want any of that: they are using a very high- end, very secure system, in which case we provide the base operating system without any of the extra code.” Other security devices available include an emergency erase function, where all the data can be erased via a hot button or a secure remote command from the ground station, or if the telemetry link is lost for a certain period the data cartridges can automatically be erased to stop the information falling into the wrong hands. Going even further, there are destructive erase options that render the SSD either completely functionless or in some cases even burnt, rendering any information completely inaccessible. Looking ahead As for the future, one of the major changes coming is on the CPU side. Memory is becoming smaller and cheaper, roughly on the same two-year cycle as computers have been for the past few decades. There are also some very interesting technologies from the CPU side that consume less power, and in some cases cost less. The CPU manufacturers are able to take some of the technology developed for the gaming industry, remove the gaming functionality and just provide the processing power. For embedded platforms that is of real value, because it will reduce the cost of the computing while delivering greater availability of CPU time.
