78 Focus | Lidar Full circle As UAVs come to be used for a wider range of applications, so developers of the lighter Lidar sensors currently being designed see an opportunity. While full-sensor systems can provide longer mission times for scanning, Lidar mapping and surveying applications, other potential applications such as object recognition are emerging. That should allow for more accurate collision avoidance systems in airborne vehicles – particularly as regards static and temporary obstacles such as cranes, which may not appear on maps, which is a major challenge for delivery applications. However, the volume production of Lidar sensors will allow their use in a wide range of vehicles, initially as a safety system for object detection but also for fully autonomous L4 and L5 systems.
