42 Focus | Radar systems measurements at altitudes from 5 to 100 m, where the readings from atmospheric altimeters can vary widely. This is particularly important for delivery UAVs that will be operating close to the ground. It can also be factored into digital mapping to avoid collisions with known structures such as power lines. This has been particularly interesting for safety-critical applications that need lightweight redundant altitude sensors. For example, a single-channel sensor can cost less than $100, and in volume production could go as low as $10 for an automotive design, says its manufacturer. In conclusion, which radar topology will become dominant is not necessarily governed by the weight, size and power, but by the requirements of an application. Once these have been determined – by the regulators for small UAVs close to the ground, and by the car makers and Tier One suppliers for Levels 3, 4 and 5 driverless cars – then the technologies will be optimised for those requirements. Today’s components are being designed with that very much in mind.
