16 The biennial IDEX show will be held on February 17 to 21, 2019, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in the UAE. This international defence exhibition and conference has demonstrations on the latest technology across the land, sea and air sectors of defence. IDEX is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and is organised by the IDEX LLC in association and with the full support of the UAE Armed Forces. While the previously co-located UMEX show is now a standalone event next running in 2020, there will undoubtedly be unmanned technologies on show among the 1100 local and international defence manufacturers and contractors exhibiting within the 12 exhibition halls, concourse and atrium. NAVDEX, the Maritime Security Area, will feature local and international exhibitors who specialise in naval, maritime and coastal security technology, equipment and crafts. Located on the dock edge, NAVDEX will also feature on- water exhibits, daily demonstrations and visiting navy vessels. The International Defence Conference held at IDEX aims to bring thought leaders, policy makers, influencers, researchers and futurists under one roof in Abu Dhabi to debate and share ideas related to technological advancement and disruptive technologies. This year’s agenda will centre on four interrelated focus areas: Economics, Security & Stability, Offset, and Innovation & Artificial Intelligence. The show will consist of a free-to-attend exhibition involving 200 global suppliers and a paid-for conference programme, as well as live on-water demos and hands-on technology. On display in the exhibition you will find the latest technologies and innovations in acoustics, bathymetry, cameras, robotics, sensors, navigation, positioning, instrumentation and most importantly autonomous and unmanned vessels. The conference is coordinated by a committee of ocean leaders from NOAA, SUT, TMA and the US Navy among others. Within the conference will be the technical programme that will run a series of technical tracks exploring the latest developments in ocean science and technology, and their application in supporting the safe and sustainable use of the ocean and protection of the marine environment. The topic of particular interest to our community is the Unmanned Vehicles, Vessels and Robotics track, which will focus on innovative developments and applications in marine autonomous systems, including robotics, AUVs, ROVs and ASVs. There will be contributions that address multi-vehicle or collaborative elements, the current limitations of autonomy, rapid response capabilities and over-the-horizon (beyond visual line of sight) operations, new sensing and imaging technologies that can be hosted on these platforms, and the role of AI in optimising autonomy.
