“Our main challenge with components is that some manufacturers really don’t want their systems being used in military vehicles,” Hankewitz explains. “We have to choose suppliers very carefully.” So far, for example, Milrem has been able to use motors from both Heinzmann and Vogel & Plotscher on the THeMIS as well as the Multiscope, he says. Rapid payload integration The payload support system is designed to enable payloads to be changed within an hour, so that the Multiscope can be configured before a mission at short notice and reconfigured in the field. This reconfigurability extends to the vehicle’s ground clearance, which can be adjusted to suit the terrain and the payload. It can be increased from 40 to 60 cm by using sets of mounting points that are positioned at different heights on the track modules. As an option, the payload platform can be fitted on top of the track modules, which can then be brought closer together to make the whole vehicle narrower. Electrical integration for military payloads is simple, programme director Juri Pajuste explains, as they all work in the same voltage range. “Basically, we provide the connection for power, and that’s mostly it,” he says, “plus a mount between the payload and the vehicle.” Such simplicity is a result of the decision to keep the vehicle, payload control and comms systems entirely separate. In future, with higher levels of autonomy, Pajuste explains, it should be possible for one operator to manage both the vehicle and the payload, switching from one to the other as necessary. Once told where to go, the vehicle would plan its route and avoid obstacles while the operator concentrates on the mission system. Civilian payloads that Milrem has integrated or is working to integrate include Leica Geosystems’ Pegasus:Two mobile mapping sensor platform for surveys in hazardous environments, a water tank, remotely operated water cannon, lights and thermal cameras Designed and Manufactured in the USA Phone: 410-732-3500 Email:
