be fitted below the fuselage at the centre of gravity, and can also be exchanged quickly. “The 178 HL carries all kinds of heavy payloads such as Lidars, such as gas measurement systems, professional laser scanners or other custom sensors up to 6 kg, and is a highly capable and multifunctional platform for mapping jobs,” Kadura says. “That gives commercial operators a broad spectrum of applications using only one platform.” Based on early experience with its customers, Wingcopter designed a standard release mechanism for plug- and play payloads mounted under the belly. This contains all the electrical interfaces needed for power supply as well as comms between the flight controller, trigger mechanisms or any antennas that have to be mounted on top of the UAV, and the payload. So far, Wingcopter has integrated several mapping cameras, EO/ IR cameras, Lidar systems, different versions of its package delivery box and custom sensors. One of the Lidars is the Surveyor Ultra from YellowScan, which has been designed for use on high-speed UAVs. Weighing 1.7 kg, it measures 17.8 cm long by 10.4 cm wide and 14 cm high. Power consumption is quoted as 19 W, and it runs off its own internal batteries, which enable a typical run time of 1.2 hours. The manufacturer quotes an operating temperature range of -10 to +40 C.
