He says the DDS is principally intended to bring the USV back aboard the mother ship if a sensor in the gondola has to be changed or a mechanical failure has to be dealt with. Most routine turnarounds between missions are accomplished without taking the DriX out of the water. These mainly involve refuelling, visual inspection and retrieval of data, which is stored in onboard memory rather than transmitted over the comms links. Maintenance can be carried out on the vehicle when it is inside the DDS, permitting crew members to open the hatches in the top of the hull that give access to the engine, navigation and control systems for example.
