Platform one Hitec Commercial Solutions has launched servo actuators for UAV designs that use the CAN bus (writes Rory Jackson). “These servos specifically communicate in UAV-CAN,” said Hitec’s Shawn Spiker. “We’ve worked with engineers versed in the UAV-specific variety of CAN to come up with a standard protocol by which these servos can be plugged into a flight controller and immediately begin communicating data on position feedback, current, voltage and other information the servo can provide. “There are multiple variants of the CAN protocol, but UAV-CAN works seamlessly with Ardupilot and PX4.” Among the UAV-CAN-compatible servos is Hitec’s MD-series, which use 32-bit programmable digital circuits and magnetic encoder position sensors. The overall UAV- CAN servo line-up ranges in weight from 11.9 to 400 g, with torque ranging from 1.8 kgf-cm to 162.2 kgf-cm respectively.
