16 Unmanned systems offer defence and security organisations a range of opportunities to trim their operating costs while removing personnel from potentially hostile environments, as well as gathering intelligence and reconnaissance data on such environments at a distance. Advances in artificial intelligence, autonomous fleet management and machine learning are also poised to offer significant force multipliers for armed forces willing to invest in and work towards technological change. Given these opportunities and technological advances, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) is set to host USDPS (Unmanned Systems – Defense. Protection. Security) on August 20 and 21 at the Marriott Wardman Park convention hotel in Washington DC. The event will bring military leaders, strategic experts and defence industry supply chain actors in contact with unmanned system developers. It will also provide a forum for establishing connections, sharing concepts and gaining critical insights into how unmanned systems have evolved – and will continue to do so – to help security forces keep the peace in a time of rising hostilities and shrinking defence budgets. The USDPS schedule includes a number of breakout sessions and solution showcases. These will communicate to attendees the kinds of advances in defence- critical areas such as autonomy, artificial intelligence and UAV threat-tracking and mitigation. They will also provide updates on how strategically important UAS, USV and UUV projects are progressing in their technological capabilities and degrees of maturity. At the time of writing, more than 130 UAS manufacturers, suppliers and solution developers were listed to attend, with many more expected to have signed on by the end of the summer. As ever, The UAS Summit & Expo is one of the longest-running annual events for experts and stakeholders in unmanned aerial technology to gather and discuss the latest in research, development and innovation in UAVs and their subsystems. The event is to be held in the Alerus Center, near the research offices of the exhibition floor is expected to play host to a huge number of new product launches, orders, investments and r&d partnerships among start-ups and major aerospace and robotics corporations from around the world. The conference programme is set to feature keynote addresses from organisations such as the FAA, NASA and Unicef on how UAVs are being adopted and integrated to better meet the needs of countries and markets around the world. the Northern Plains UAS Test Site in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on August 27 and 28. It is expected to feature speakers from government and defence authorities, who will discuss updates on regulations for unmanned aircraft and integrating them into the national airspace, among other keynote addresses and panel discussions. Outside the conference hall, the Also, specialised ‘enterprise tracks’ will offer insights into how UAVs can be used in critical industries such as construction, mining and infrastructure inspection. In addition, panel discussions of critical technological advances in urban air mobility, energy storage solutions and UAS traffic management will offer insights into the forces that will shape the years ahead for unmanned aircraft.
