61 AUVSI Xponential 2019 | Show report with the user’s specified requirements, although further details were unavailable at the time of writing. “Designing-in the extra ruggedness for higher internal temperatures was perhaps the biggest challenge of all the different modifications’,” added Konstantins Popiks of UAV Factory. “In general, pusher aircraft configurations can’t easily be adapted to additional cooling requirements, so to make a UAV compliant with higher temperatures we needed a lot of creativity from our engineers and a lot of testing.” UAV Propulsion Tech, a component supplier, attended the show to display a number of new systems from various UAV companies. Of particular note was gimbal manufacturer DST Control’s new OTUS U170. “It’s a 170 mm-diameter gimbal that integrates EO/IR and a laser rangefinder with a 100 µrad destabilisation. It also has a vibration isolation mount consisting of a series of elastomeric components in an aluminium frame for further improving the quality of video recordings and the reliability of the structure in high-vibration environments,” said Bob Schmidt. The IR camera on the OTUS U170 is available with a 3x true optical zoom lens, and the laser rangefinder is capable of measurements up to 3 km. The gimbal is available with Ethernet, H.264 video streaming, KLV metadata, onboard video recording, advanced video tracking and multi-image blending as options. It consumes less than 40 W of power, with 20 W being typical. It weighs about 2.3 kg and comes with an RS-485 port for user control. UAV Propulsion Tech was also showing US company ePropelled’s new 12 kW Gwynt series of starter-generators, which are rated to a minimum of 95% power efficiency. “A significant attraction with these is their maximum temperature capability. They can operate at up to 200 C, which is higher than most starter generators, and without damaging the magnets – an issue that rare earth magnets are typically sensitive to,” Schmidt noted. “They have some patent-pending techniques for keeping the electrical parts of the generators cool.” Fuel pump manufacturer HP-Tech’s latest brushless motor gear pump formed part of the UAV Propulsion Tech display as well. The system comes in versions compatible with kerosene or gasoline, and uses a ‘smart pump’ to measure fuel pressure and control the speed of the pump and gearset to maintain flow to the engine without needing a return fuel system. “That’s common in automotive systems because they don’t recirculate fuel, and it means the UAV needs only one fuel line going between the engine and the fuel tank. The fuel pump needs less power because it’s only sending what the engine is using, rather than continually pumping what’s required at wide-open throttle,” Schmidt added. Midwest Digital AV was on hand to discuss its Soliton Zao-S digital encoder, which is designed for H.265 audio video mobile broadcasting. The Soliton Zao-S streams over multiple standards including 3G, 4G-LTE, wi-fi and satellite solutions. “This bonded cellular technology is designed using our patented RASCOW algorithm to allow the Zao-S to provide audio and video transmission to receiver software and the cloud,” said Brian Falatovich.
