UST030

4 In the years since UST was launched, the technology for unmanned systems has progressed dramatically. When we first covered Lidar sensor technology for sense & avoid applications, the systems being used for the first generation of driverless cars were bulky and cost tens of thousands of dollars. A lot of the technology was still in development. Now that vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers look to production designs of autonomous vehicles in the next few years, there are more than 100 suppliers of Lidar components covering lasers, receivers and the beam steering. All this is detailed on page 82. Similarly the development of underwater vehicles has progressed significantly. We look at a new category of craft, the extra-large underwater unmanned vehicle, or XLUUV, on page 22, which can travel thousands of kilometres underwater for months at a time. Being able to operate a long way from home is a key advantage of unmanned systems. On page 78, we look at how the RISE project is pushing the performance of airborne operations beyond visual line of sight, and on page 58 we look at an opposed-piston engine that gives UAVs significantly longer range. Another new vehicle, the Global Unmanned Spray System, is examined on page 92. It marks the move to integrated ground and air systems for agriculture. All this demonstrates how technology stimulates new modes of operation and new categories of unmanned systems across the globe.
