90 Focus | Infotainment systems produced in 2021 and 2022 have 10 times the performance of the previous generation. These are aimed at Ethernet switches handling 100 Mbit/s data streams, so for Gigabit Ethernet there will need to be another jump in performance to support the needs of cyber security for autonomous systems. They will also have to address upcoming regulations from the UN’s Economic Commission for Europe on cyber security, equipping vehicle systems with the ability to detect and respond to cyber security incidents. The latest version, WP.29, defines the process of type approval for wheeled vehicles, equipment and parts, but as yet there are no specific regulations for autonomous systems. Conclusion Cars now on the road use 100 Mbit/s networks, and a few vendors are moving to 1 Gbit/s. The move to autonomous systems is driving designs around the emerging 10 Gbit/s automotive Ethernet standard with 2.5, 5 and 10 Gbit/s devices all becoming available in the next year. These will then be available with automotive qualification and functional safety for production platforms in 2022 and ’23. They will be followed by 25 Gbit/s to handle the high-speed requirements of vehicle cabins. In that same time frame, new acoustic networking technologies will open up more deterministic noise- cancelling and higher multi-channel audio systems. All of these will be combined in the design of the cabin of an autonomous vehicle. This will require a complex combination of a multi-gigabit Ethernet backbone with local bus technologies and processing subsystems to deliver a range of capabilities such as ANC and acoustic cocoons.
