The increase in home deliveries has driven interest in unmanned systems, but not necessarily with UAVs buzzing around the sky to deliver to homes. Instead, plans are well-advanced for larger UAVs to deliver goods quickly between distribution hubs. A deal between DHL and UAV developer Dronamics will see same-day delivery between distribution centres in 2022 using its Black Swan aircraft (see UST 22, October/November 2018). At the same time, Pipistrel has been working with Honeywell and other suppliers on the Nuuva 300 with the same idea in mind, this time using a vertical take-off design, as we discuss in Platform One on page 6. Pipistrel expects to have the UAV in the air for commercial service in 2023. That of course requires safety certification, even when moving in proscribed corridors. This option has been taken only so far with UGVs (see our report on Exotec, page 72). As we report in Platform One though, an international standard has now been developed for low-speed Level 4 driverless pods to operate safely in the wider urban environment. That of course needs extensive testing, which is why simulation is so important (see page 34) All of this highlights the way autonomous systems are moving into society, with demand driven by the lessons of the pandemic.
