52 U AVs have come a long way since the inception of this magazine. While there were many groundbreaking projects and achievements in autonomous flight being made prior to 2014, many of them were restricted to the domains of major aerospace and defence primes, not the wider commercial world. Those days are long gone. UAVs not only now come in all shapes and sizes, they are being engineered and mass-produced with levels of intelligence that in the past would have required supercomputers. And although the UAV industry largely came about from people seeing that consumer UAVs could provide a cheaper alternative to manned helicopters for Safety in numbers August/September 2021 | Unmanned Systems Technology Intelligent, mass-produced UAVs are taking on a growing range of tasks that pose hazards to people.
