61 around the DA-70, while the GenPod 100 is built around the larger and more powerful DA-100 (and features stronger brackets and isolators, as well as a lighter alternator and decompression valves to keep the weight down). Around the engine is a turnkey assembly of powertrain components, including all the parts for air and fuel handling, electronic control, starting, ignition, a propeller and so on – meaning the UAV manufacturer need not be concerned with choosing, customising or mounting any of those parts on their own system. End-users can therefore focus on sizing and positioning their more vehicle- specific subsystems – such as autopilots, batteries and fuel tanks – as needed. The back face of each GenPod features a largely identical array of mating points for fuel feeds, autopilots and aircraft or nacelle fronts to connect securely to the engine systems. While other turnkey UAV engine solutions have featured in this magazine before, the mechanisms and design of the GenPod enable its users to remove and replace their engines (including the ancillary components) within seconds rather than the many minutes (if not upwards of an hour) that other systems can require. The concept for the GenPod originated in 2016, a time when HFE had recently completed considerable work in fleet production, r&d and flight operations for its customers. “Our customers using the Desert Aircraft engine told us they didn’t like having to remove a dozen screws and pull out a bunch of wiring harnesses oh- so-carefully every time they needed to replace an engine,” says Tom West, CEO of HFE International. “They were flying HFE International GenPod | Dossier Customers using the Desert Aircraft engine told us they didn’t like having to remove a dozen screws every time they needed to replace an engine Unmanned Systems Technology | August/September 2021 The GenPod 100 is larger than the GenPod 70, hence it uses stronger brackets and lighter decompression valves to restrain the weight increase Connectors for power, signals and fuel have been selected carefully to ensure safety throughout the GenPod’s lifetime amid many quick removals and installations
