The Inspiration4 mission by SpaceX for example, which took four civilians into space on a three-day journey, was enabled by remote and autonomous control technologies. The boosters that propelled these astronauts and equipment into orbit returned under their own control, ready to be reused and thus cutting the cost of launches. This autonomous capability is a key factor in returning people to the Moon in the coming years. The latest advances in unmanned space technologies are detailed in this issue’s Insight on page 52. Meanwhile, AI and machine learning are being used in many different parts of unmanned systems. Alongside central controllers, AI is used for signal conditioning and filtering in navigation and wireless systems, as we discuss on page 36, and is increasingly used to coordinate swarms of multiple aircraft. These swarm machine learning algorithms are also being adopted for space systems, coordinating mining and exploration missions. Research into these space technologies is feeding back into improvements in terrestrial systems. NASA for one has been bringing its expertise in distributed power systems to terrestrial aircraft, as detailed on page 98, coming full circle on the benefits of r&d for all kinds of unmanned systems.
