These account largely for the valve placements and ensure the camshaft can actuate all four intake and exhaust valves with just four cam lobes rather than eight. These, along with almost all the components in the engine, are cast and then machined to exact shapes. This is more expensive and potentially more time-consuming than cutting components from billet, and makes customisation more challenging (given the need to design and manufacture moulds for each part). “However, it ensures that the metal forms more strongly than billet,” Zucchini explains. “When you water- cut stock aluminium, you damage the crystalline structure and weaken its mechanical integrity. “And honestly, there are maybe five choices of aluminium grades when it comes to commercial bar stock. When you choose to cast, you can choose from hundreds of grades.” The cylinders themselves have a bore of 92 mm and a stroke of 68 mm; with four cylinders, that makes for a total displacement of 1.8 litres (450 cc per cylinder). As is to be expected for a largely symmetrical boxer, they fire in a 4-3-2-1 order, alternating between left and right to minimise vibration, with a combustion event at every 180 º turn of the crank. Cast iron cylinder liners are integrated, primarily for their rigidity, although Gamberini lauds the benefits of using nickel silicon carbide coatings as an alternative lining and suggests that Flygas might opt for the latter in the future. Three standard piston rings – two for compression, one for oiling – seal and lubricate the cylinders.
