Platform one Anemoment has developed a spherical wind flux sensor that can be mounted on a UAV to take wind flux measurements in the atmosphere (writes Nick Flaherty). The TriSonica Sphere’s 3D design dramatically reduces shadow correction while increasing the accuracy of vertical wind measurements. The open path through the sensor enables it to effectively and accurately capture measurements in all three dimensions (U, V and W) of airflow with the least possible distortion of the wind field, especially vertical turbulence. The airflow is also less obstructed by the vertical design, resulting in an increased acceptance angle, which is important for many applications mounted on a UAV. An all-aluminium construction means the The TriSonica Sphere is light enough to sit on a UAV to make vertical wind measurements in the atmosphere sensor weighs 225 g, and it draws less than 500 mW from the UAV’s battery pack with a 5-36 V supply. It operates at 60 kHz and can produce data at rates from 1 to 100 Hz via an RS-232, RS-422 or 3 V UART data link to the UAV.
