It has struggled to overcome delays for more than 10 years, with hydrogen leaks repeatedly halting the countdown. Now though, the uncrewed Orion capsule, launched by the giant SLS rocket, has travelled further than any other manned spacecraft, to the dark side of the Moon and back. Photographs show unparalleled detail on the surface of our lunar satellite. But the programme, which we detailed in the Space insight in our previous issue ( UST 46, October/November 2022), is also notable for using the uncrewed module to test technologies before risking a human crew. The mannequins on board are providing vital data on the performance of the module and its control systems throughout the mission. That feedback is forming the basis of a return to the Moon for humans in the next few years, and the possibility of establishing a lunar base. This role of using uncrewed systems to test out technology also extends to the depths of the ocean. For example, using machine learning to identify unexploded munitions on the seabed (see Platform One in this issue) is just one of the ways AI applications are being used to keep humans safe; we also explore using AI to monitor wind turbines in our Focus on page 38.
