4 2019 marks a very clear point for unmanned systems as the technology matures in real- world operations. In the US for example, Waymo’s commercial autonomous taxi services are now rolling out, to be followed by several others, while robot systems are carrying parcels on city pavements, and paying passengers are sailing in autonomous ferries around the fjords of Scandinavia. What is clearly missing though are autonomous aircraft. Despite being one of the first sectors to adopt the technology, the regulatory and energy challenges have so far held back the wider commercial deployment of UAVs. Many technology providers however are readying themselves for when that changes. The CES show in Las Vegas in January 2019 is set to demonstrate the advances in wireless charging that we highlight in our focus on page 34. These are being driven by the expectation that BVLOS operations will be approved for commercial operation in the US, Europe and Asia in the coming months. Such systems have been operating in Africa for the past 12 months. This regulatory change will see a dramatic rise in the roll-out of airborne autonomous systems and associated technologies, from long-range and mesh wireless links to wireless charging. Charging systems are even moving to providing power during flight, either via lasers or a ‘power cloud’ where they can hover and recharge their batteries. The next two years will see that dramatic increase in long-range UAV deployment as regulations catch up with the technology.
